Thin Client Modules

There are up to four physical layers for an installation of Sales:
  • Many client computers, each running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.
  • One or more web servers, running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5 (part of Windows 2000 only).
  • • One or more business rules servers, running Windows 2000 Server. Microsoft Component Services (COM+) provides the technology to host the business rules components on the server.
  • One database server, running Windows 2000 Server, and SQL Server 7 or 2000.

For a low number of clients, it is possible to combine the web server, business rules server, and even database server on to the same physical machine. Generally, however, the best performance is achieved by combining business rules and web servers on to the same physical machine wherever possible.

Scalability

The scalability of the SiteStream thin client modules is the same as that for the thick client modules, with the addition of also having the ability to scale the web servers across multiple load-balanced machines (also known as a web farm).

Availability

The availability of the SiteStream thin client modules is also very similar to the thick client modules. Again, the availability of the web farm is best accomplished by providing a load-balancing mechanism such that if one server fails the other machines in the group will take over.
